Hi reader. I work in the space AI industry and keep tabs on all of the competition. Below is a list of every company that I know of working on an AI constellation. Eventually, I may make a similar list of available compute hardware, however, that is a much longer and less interesting list. This is primarily written as a reference for my own personal use. Opinions are interjected. The style and level of editing reflects the price you have paid for this information... It will be updated and revised at some level of regularity between my other projects.

At first I hated StarCloud because their valuation seems to far exceed their technological innovation, however, I have since realized that StarCloud's value is not in technology or hardware but in the realm of public discourse. Before they started advertising their first payload's launch few people were talking about AI in space. Afterwards, we got Elon Musk, Bezos, and Google all announcing space-based compute projects. The shift in the Overton window towards space compute due to that one ad campaign was massive. THAT is where StarCloud shines. Believe or don't in their technology but they have massively benefitted the space AI community through their genius marketing.
Let's expand upon why I don't believe space-based data centers are viable in the near future. As of this moment I count at least ten other companies capable of fielding an H100 into space within a year, multiple of which have market caps less than the amount Starcloud raised as a SEED round. The main reason that nobody has done so yet, is because there has yet to be a single paying customer of in space data centers. Yes you can plop a satellite into a terminator SSO and it will have access to sunlight 100% of the time. Yes the heat issue is solved, space radiators work on very simple principles. Yes the hardware will survive in LEO, various companies have been flying COTS GPUs for the better part of a decade and actively choose to do so over their more expensive radiation hardened counterparts. What is missed is cost, regulation, and reliability.
Cost: The simplest argument that running an H100 in orbit is more expensive than doing so on the ground is StarCloud themselves. StarCloud-1's development cost millions of dollars to get a single H100 chip in orbit. I can buy and run a DGX Spark in my bedroom for ~$4,000... Yes you can populate multiple chips per satellite, but I can also populate more chips in my bedroom and can additionally do so far faster. When one of my bedroom H100s breaks down, I can even take a brief lapse from internet slop-posting to fix or replace it with another working card - an impossibility in orbit. If you were to scale up my bedroom hypothesis, you might rent a warehouse instead, eventually arriving at a similar design to the datacenters which are currently in use today. The most affordable and simplest solution.
Where space data centers attempt to fool the public into believing they are economical is by pointing out that solar power is free one you get to space. What they leave out is that solar power is also free on the ground, but only generates at a median capacity factor of 24% (according to StarCloud.) This leaves us with a binary choice: if launching a solar panel to space is less than 4x more expensive than leaving it on the ground then in space data centers start to make economical sense. SpaceX is currently billing at $6,500 per kilogram to low Earth orbit. A quick google found me 10 acres of land in the middle of the US for about $13,000 which could host a few metric tons of solar panels. The price differential is left as a fun exercise for the reader.
Regulation: "But wait!" you scream. "Licensing a new datacenter in the US could take years, it's a total nightmare." These words, of course, come from someone who has never heard of the ITU. The book 'Eccentric Orbits' has some great commentary on the difficulties of constellation licensing, which I assure you has gotten more difficult not less since the 90s. Let's take a look at some quotes.
"The army of Motorola employees sent to Torremolinos far outnumbered that representing the U.S. government. The United States sent teams from the FCC, Voice of America, Department of Commerce, Pentagon, State Department, NASA, National Science Foundation, Coast Guard, U.S. Information Agency, and FAA—but all of those delegations combined were still smaller than Motorola’s team. Since Motorola had offices around the world, the company was able to identify political allies in advance, but the company’s war plan went one step further and made sure that Motorola employees were named as actual voting members: the United States, Canada, France, and Australia all had Motorola employees sitting in their official delegations. Add to this the fact that Travis Marshall, Motorola’s chief lobbyist, was the U.S. ambassador to the International Telecommunication Union, which administers the conference".
"Does your country have an entrenched phone company that fears Iridium? No problem—we’ll tack a dollar on to the ‘tail charges’ of every Iridium phone call made from your country and send it back your way. If idealism didn’t work, maybe greed would. ‘The fifty-four African countries were used to getting checks every month from AT&T,’ said Mondale, ‘so we had to agree not to undercut that direct-dial service.’ This stratagem would come back to haunt Iridium in later years, as national telephone companies routinely asked for kickbacks disguised as fees—tiny Madagascar wanted $500,000 a year—just to keep the Iridium license in place."
"The 10 years before the 1997 launch [of Iridium] were ‘full of treachery, deception, and espionage worthy of the Roman Senate at its worst, penetrating across borders, arousing the ire of nations, and often resulting in outright violations of the law."
Unless you have the funding and are prepared to establish a nation-state scale clandestine operation, I recommend staying away from satellite constellation licensing... If you think that convincing a local council to allow a high-paying, job-creating warehouse is more difficult a task than convincing nearly every nation on Earth to allow your orbital constellation then I cannot help you.
Reliability: A wise mentor of mine once told me that building a satellite is a lot like building a car, except it has to travel millions of miles without breaking down or needing any form of servicing. It is simply harder to fix or replace parts on orbit than it is on Earth. Getting within proximity of the satellite requires a multi-million dollar rocket, servicing it would require beyond state of the art level automated robotics. I'm going to add to the reliability conversation a consideration of communications reliability as well. Satellites do not have 100% communications uptime. You can only talk to them when they are in view of a ground station. This may be as frequent as a few times per ~90 minute orbit (LEO) or as sparse as a few times per day and these communications windows only last a few minutes. Clouds, solar flares, atmospheric anomalies, jamming and more will all work together to reduce your uptime. For applications like datacenters, where the main product is - data - a strong communications pipeline is essential. There is nothing in space that can come close to the reliability or throughput of a simple terrestrial ethernet line. In-space crosslink technology is growing but can only service a limited amount of users and still relies on a traditional downlink at some point in the network. The best (only viable option) at this moment is StarLink optical data terminals. Speaking of Starlink, Elon Musk just announced a plan to use those satellites as computational data centers... So StarCloud's entire communications network is only possible and subject to immediate cancellation due to the kindness of... their main competitor (whom they may also rely on for launch).
Why is SpaceX Different? You would be smart to question why I think StarCloud will fail but SpaceX's StarLink will succeed at in-orbit processing. There is one very simple but key difference between the two architectures: StarCloud is trying to launch dedicated datacenters which rely entirely on datacenter customers to fund and maintain the venture. My thesis is that there are not enough, and will not be enough (in the near-term) customers to sustain such a model. StarLink is an already highly profitable constellation which would use EXCESS compute onboard to REDUCE THE LOSS of idle time and processing capability onboard. SpaceX's onboard processing is a method to optimize a pre-existing, profitable system with already fielded hardware. The cost of deployment for their 'datacenter' network is $0 because the hardware is already in orbit doing other things most of the time. Such a system will always outcompete a dedicated service where there is a sparse customer base. For another comparison see Musk's plan to use idle time on Tesla cars for compute. Suggesting Tesla build more cars just to increase their total compute would be the same as arguing they should build dedicated orbital data centers... ludicrous.
Feasibility rant over.
The StarCloud-1 Satellite: is a 60kg Corvus-Micro bus designed by Astro Digital. Power is provided by one fixed and two deployable solar panels producing a maximum of ~150W or ~90W orbit average power (OAP) generation assuming state of the art triple-junction cells and a constant sun pointing attitude. State of the art maximum power point tracking is about 10% inefficient and voltage conversion another 10% inefficient leaving an estimated 72.9W OAP. The satellite bus itself likely consumes 5-10W. A NVIDIA H100 GPU can use 350-700W under full load, meaning that StarCloud-1 has an effective uptime of 9-18% or 8-16 minutes per orbit. Such runtimes are not uncommon as many other companies have struggled with uptime on their prototype AI satellites before. The only visible battery onboard is a part of the Astro Digital avionics stack and appears to be no more than 200Wh, meaning a smaller depth of discharge of 40-60Wh would be used per orbit (to prolong battery life in orbit) indicating the uptime may be even shorter than the aforementioned numbers.
The satellite features a fixed position X-band radio which (from a video showing the internals of the satellite) looks like it might be an IQ SpaceCom Xlink making a maximum of 200Mbps link while requiring the entire satellite to slew towards the ground station - and away from the sun, further reducing uptime.
The most interesting part of the bus is the star tracker which appears to be a ST-RT from Rocket Lab (formerly Sinclair). If you don't know much about spacecraft GNC systems, know that this is the Bugatti of star trackers. Extremely expensive and only broken out when the absolute peak of performance is required. That baby has a 5 arcsecond (0.0013 degrees) one sigma knowledge uncertainty. This is the kind of star tracker you would need if you were taking VERY narrow field of view sub-meter ground resolution images of Earth. A datacenter, however, requires only coarse Sun pointing. An inaccuracy of even a few degrees would make a tiny loss in the Sun pointing power generation of the satellite. Considering they have already made many uptime sacrifices, it does not make sense to me that they would choose to spend so much on a star tracker to gain back a few seconds of runtime per orbit. Either Astro-Digital fleeced them to make more commission on the bus sale, they are complete fools, or they are up to something we don't know about. Considering one of their main investor's is In-Q-Tel (the CIA's VC firm) option #3 is not entirely out of the picture but would suggest some really interesting relations with YC.
The processing hardware itself appears boring. @Gfilche on X did a great tour of StarCloud's facilities where we see that the processing hardware stack is effectively a bunch of H100's strapped inside a half-inch thick metal container. Surrounding the hardware with a bunch of metal to reduce the experienced radiation inside the box is not a new idea, but one that nobody has tried yet since the cost of mass to orbit has been prohibitively expensive. With the rise of Starship, easy VC money and declining launch costs, StarCloud may be right to bet in that direction. That said, if the processing stack is as simple as that, StarCloud's entire hardware IP would be effectively worthless so I HOPE that there is something else going on I cannot see. The main technology StarCloud is working on is supposedly their low-cost radiators. It will be interesting in the future to see what kind of technology those pack. That said, if radiators are their only IP they risk becomming a component company akin to the fall of Sidus Space and there are not currently enough micro-sat radiator customers to justify StarCloud's current 9-figure valuation meaning a down-round could be in the future.
If they truly want to dominate the orbital processing space, StarCloud is going to have to do a lot more than dominate the podcast scene. Contrary to popular belief they are not the first, and will not be the last in this domain.
Win or lose, I thank them for their progression of the edge processing cause.

"Designed to meet global demand for sovereign space capabilities" is not how I would choose to introduce my most capable satellite platform in the midst of the greatest resurgence of American nationalism within the century. NextGen is designed to be an ITAR-free high-resolution (30 cm), AI enabled satellite to allow non-US countries to surveil the world. Now I know what you might be thinking. The US Munitions list Category XV section a.2 clearly marks spacecraft capable of 'autonomously detect[ing] and track[ing] moving ground, airborne, missile, or space objects other than celestial bodies, in real-time using imaging' as ITAR controlled. "The platform allows [non-US] governments and operators to DETECT CHANGES on the ground in near REAL TIME and ACT on EMERGING THREATS or OPPORTUNITIES without delay" sounds awfully close.
What you missed is that Satellogic either has a man on the inside, cannot read, or does not care and is willing to embark on a landmark court case for our mutual benefit.
I have nothing against Satellogic and would also love to reduce the restrictions of ITAR, but every other US company on this list has to deal with these regulations and I believe in a level playing field.
NextGen is effectively an upscaled version of NewSat. I continue to commend the simplicity of the design. Grab a lens, stick big plates of solar panels around it, put it in space. Those MASSIVE fixed solar panels should generate an orbit average power (OAP) of about 208 watts. If Satellogic plans to maintain the same 0.5 ratio of power use to power generation as featured on NewSat then the OAP use of the bus and AI processors will be about 104W and the battery will hold about 600Wh. Attitude determination error should be within the 0.01-0.05 deg range and pointing accuracy to within 0.08 degrees with less than 0.05 deg/sec jitter and a position knowledge error of 250m. All ADCS values are CE90. We can expect the same X and S-band TT&C at 100 kbps. You can see what appears to be an S-band patch antenna mounted on the side-facing solar panel implying they will be using multiple S-band patch antennas to achieve near-omnidirectional TT&C communications. It looks like they have grown tired of slewing the satellite for high-speed data transmission and instead chosen to mount a Ka-band downlink permanently nadir. The high-speed Ka-band downlink should be capable of greater than 1Gbps data transmission. The satellite will most likely feature a chemical propulsion system for maneuvering and collision avoidance.
The previous NewSat generation used NVIDIA Jetson processors and even partnered with Palantir on software development. Both could be making a comeback. Either two T5000s - if they are bold and move fast - or a stack of less than five Jetson AGX Orin cards would fit the anticipated power consumption profile.
Overall, the design is extremely simple and therefore should be cheap to produce. Fixed panels, a fixed antenna, and using plenty of volume limit cost and risk. The release of the NextGen platform immediately follows Planet's release of the Owl platform. All of this was then quickly followed by Satellogic announcing a public offering to raise capital to fund the constellation. Alongside a recent $30M AI-enabled data contract, I expect them to dilute and raise another $30-50M. Each NextGen satellite will probably cost about $10M meaning the initial constellation will be 3-8 satellites. I use such a low-cost estimate considering the resolution because the satellite design is far simpler than what we see coming from other manufacturers.

With all of the Hype in the space world around AI, Planet has announced what will probably be the most expensive satellites specifically designed to run AI at the edge - the Owl. Unlike the Pelican, the Owl trades resolution for swath achieving a ridiculous 60km field of view in what we can assume will be a line scanning mode similar to the Dove. That said, 1 meter resolution is nothing to balk at and mapping the globe daily at 1m is a massive enhancement over the current state of the art 3 meter map, also by Planet.
The satellites feature two triple-deployable solar panels boasting a massive maximum power generation around 1.03KW and orbital average generation of ~309W. They have electric propulsion for station keeping and maneuvering, redundant star trackers, and two gimballed optical communications terminals. ADCS performance is good enough to ensure less than 10m ground target location accuracy. Publicly released renders have an empty Nadir face, but Will (Planet's CEO) references multiple cameras in a statement. The camera setup is likely composed of multiple line-scanning cameras offset in mounting by a few degrees to allow onboard computers to fuse the images into a single 60km wide swath. The math conveniently aligns to reveal that Planet is probably using three cameras with the same sensor as Pelican. Each covering a swath of ~20,000 pixels.
Communications with the ground is unclear, however, considering the size of a 1m resolution map of Earth's surface you can be sure that Planet is continuing with their precedent of having some of the fastest communications in town. Pelican boasts a 10 Gbps ka-band downlink which may be re-used and re-use of the S/X band TT&C systems at 16 (S) and 64 (X) kbps is also likely. The optical links appear to serve as cross-links to other satellites, however, since they are gimballed I would not be surprised to see them pointed down to assist in data downlink. It is also likely that the cross-link capability will be used to transfer edge-detected intelligence across satellites to get messages downlinked to the ground faster than ever before.
These crosslinks and wide swath speak to Planet's new overall architecture. Similar to many other newly planned constellations Planet will operate the Owls as a wide-swath detection layer set to scan Earth and queue the higher-resolution tracking layer of Pelican satellites to view areas or targets of interest. Interestingly, once the Owl constellation is complete and mapping Earth at 1m I see no reason for Planet to keep manufacturing Dove satellites, which I think will be phased out. RIP the smallsat revolution - killed by Starship and cheap mass to orbit. The Doves are my favorite satellites; they will be missed.
On-board processing is stated to include 'the latest GPU processors from NVIDIA'. We know that Pelicans use Jetson series processors. With the absolutely ridiculous amount of power available onboard, Planet could even be running a stack of Jetson T5000's. Who knows, they may even develop their own boards in-house with NVIDIA chipsets. They have the market cap to do it. Whatever it is, they are certainly planning to make use of it with hundreds of watt hours of sustained processing. Anthropic and Google will be contributing to the algorithms running onboard.
Planet is preparing to launch a technical demonstration towards the end of 2026 followed by a move into full scale production and launch over the following years. With Pelican satellites being deployed for approximately $5.5M each and the Owls being essentially triple-Pelicans I would imagine that the internal cost on the first few Owl satellites will be $10-15M. Planet is certainly making the bet that larger satellites with faster downlinks can outperform a more distributed set of smaller satellites. This is true, provided that demand exists to keep the larger satellite near full work capacity. Therefore, we can assume that Planet has seen some VERY strong demand signals involving 1m data and edge intelligence.

The Balkan constellation is a planned constellation of 120 satellites adding capability to the ESA’s Copernicus data system, replacing or enhancing the abilities of the Sentinel satellites. On-board processing is used with an unknown beaconing system (UHF?) to alert ground operators of important events ahead of scheduled data downlinks.
The Simera Sense XScape200 was designed to be narrowly shoved into a 12 or 16U chassis and it is refreshing to see Endurosat be one of the first groups to do so. These satellites appear to feature standard Cubesat ADCS with a star tracker, UHF or VHF radios (presumably for TT&C) S (presumably uplink) and X (presumably high-speed downlink) band high gain radios reaching a maximum of 1 Gbps downlink and 125 Kbps uplink when pointed or up to 19.2 Kbps during emergency communications. Based on the design, these satellites will have to maneuver and stop imaging to achieve high speed ground contact. The largest solar face features three 16U panels of triple-junction solar cells producing a maximum of ~67.4W suggesting an orbital average power consumption across the satellite is 25-30W when imaging. Panels across other faces provide power in alternative pointing or safe modes.
Processing hardware and software is provided by Agenium Space. Example applications on their website cover ship, airplane, destroyed building, marine plastic and cloud detection or forest segmentation. It appears that Agenium sources on-board processors from third parties and it is unknown which is used for the Balkan application. In the past, Endurosat has flown IBM edge processors.
The COTS hardware cost for all components used is greater than $1.5M. It is likely these satellites are flown at a cost of $3-8M per bird.

Update: With the release of the Planet Owl some have called into question the utility of the Pelican. As of now it appears that there are no plans to eliminate the Pelican or remove AI hardware from its design. It's most likely that Pelican will be built out into Planet's highest resolution platform on-demand while the Owls replace the Doves and daily Earth scanning functionality.
Readers familiar with my content might know that the Planet Labs Super Dove satellites are my favorite spacecraft. The amount of technology Planet can fit within a small form factor is unprecedented, the team behind Planet were the earliest adopters of flying non-space rated commercial components in LEO, and the internal cost figures per satellite I have heard are… unbelievably low.
Years after launching the first Doves, planet has grown to compete with the big boys and Pelican is their answer. Planet intends to fly 30 Pelican satellites to replace the aging SkySat constellation which they acquired in 2017. The full constellation should enable 30 minute revisit time.
The satellites themselves are as impressive as you expect from planet, however, far less compact than previous work. These are 215 kg spacecraft generating a maximum of 600W with 650Wh of energy storage. TT&C communications is across X and S band at 16 (S) or 64 (X) kbps with an impressive 10 Gbps ka-band downlink. Pause to read that again, 10Gbps was not a typo. Additionally, each satellite features an intersatellite cross-link with the intention of rapidly relaying data and reducing response time to customer requests and critical data delivery. ADCS performance is on the magnitude of less than 10 arcseconds. Each satellite features propulsion systems for station-keeping.
On-board processing is provided by internally developed Nvidia Jetson GPUs (unclear which generation) in partnership with NVIDIA. These are probably in a VPX form factor. Software development for these processors appears to be internal to Planet.
Planet is contracted to build and service 10 Pelican-2 satellites to SKY Perfect JSAT for $230 million placing the price per bird at ~$23M when purchased commercially. The internal cost per Pelican is closer to $5.5 million per satellite [shoutout to Tim Gallagher for that analysis]

Maxar represents the high-end of AI-Imaging satellite constellations. Six extremely large and expensive 750kg satellites fly in mid-inclination LEO to maximize the revisit rate of likely profitable areas. The resolution of these satellites is said to be 30cm with 15cm pan sharpening (likely in accordance with legal limitations) but legend has it these big guys can go finer for the right customer… These are the most highly capable commercial imaging satellites in orbit backed by the most well-connected company. When you see a particularly crisp image on Google Earth, or the news, it is probably from Maxar.
Maxar’s solution to the latency problem is steerable antennas paired with an extensive global network of satellite ground stations which, paired with the mid inclination orbit, allows for data tasking or relay in as little as ten minutes.
The processing solution onboard is unknown, likely a legacy-space VPX board cluster setup. According to outdated figures, constellation development was targeted at $600M for six satellites making the cost per bird ~$100M.

BlackSky offers capabilities similar to Maxar’s. Their website claims timely insights with customers receiving imagery in an average of 90 minutes. I hope they have found a way to act faster than that by now.
I like the design of these. Spaceflight Industries just threw a lens inside of a brick and sold it to BlackSky. Simple, reliable, affordable. A great example of meeting the mission requirements with the most basic system possible. The riskiest looking part is a solar panel used as a lens cover. When deployed, all solar panels are on one face. When you can point at the Sun, why bother populating panels in other directions. I like it. With triple-junction cells, maximum power generation is likely around 115W, with an orbit average around 50W. The satellite’s safe mode probably uses an extremely low amount of power (less than 5W) allowing the single-sided system to be power positive in an uncontrolled tumble.
UPDATE: it appears that newer generations of the BlackSky constellation include deployable solar panels and antenna dishes. Perhaps they need more power generation to run more processing onboard.
BlackSky’s website focused more on AI analytics than their competitors showcasing moving object detection with speed prediction, vehicle, aircraft, boar, and building detection capabilities. Available imagery is impressive, and near par with Maxar’s public capabilities. BlackSky is one of the primary imagery providers to the NRO (US government).

Pixxel has taken a bold new route in small satellite development by outsourcing their engineering to India instead of Eastern Europe like everyone else and they are moving fast. The first three Firefly satellites have already been launched.
Two deployable and one stationary solar panel appear to provide ~160W peak power assuming all cells are triple junction suggesting an orbital average power of 50-70W. A seemingly internally developed lens provides 5m resolution hyperspectral imagery with an impressive 40x40 km swath.
These satellites feature an unknown onboard processing suite. Interestingly, the primary motivation behind on-orbit processing for Pixxel is probably intelligent data reduction as such an impressive hyperspectral imager is bound to generate GB/minute of data which would be impossible to downlink continuously using modern communication systems and difficult to store across orbits. The on-board system likely prioritizes which data to save and downlink, disregarding all but the most important images.

NOVI is a newcomer on the scene with far less flight heritage than a Planet or Maxar. While their website mentions two active missions in orbit (one is a ISS payload), they are a long way from operating mass constellations.
The GENIE (Vistasat?) constellation appears to consist of 6U satellites packing a surprising amount of payloads including a visual spectrum camera, hyperspectral camera, RF sensor of some sort and IoT link (stated to be Iridium). These satellites appear to host a standard cubesat ADCS, omnidirectional communications (likely for TT&C) and high-speed communications (likely S or X band), and most notably an absolutely massive solar array. On-board compute is provided by NOVI’s own computers. It is likely they are flying the SP240 computer with an AMD Versal FPGA and indeterminate if any GPUs are onboard. It is unclear if NOVI will be writing their own software or partnering with another company for AI development.
The most interesting quirk of NOVI is the amount of focus on cost reduction. It looks like their constellation will mainly use AI as a way to compress or sort data to reduce overhead costs. This appears to be further reflected by the fact that they are flying the smallest platform of the companies mentioned, most likely to reduce cost of launch.

Satellogic was one of the first players to dabble with AI in space. An article from 2022 states that they had launched an edge processing imaging satellite as early as Transporter 4 using software developed in a partnership with Palantir. They have reportedly executed cloud, ship and multi-class detections notably developing for ease of shifting between different target types with hot-swappable models.
Satellogic’s constellation appears to consist of iterations upon their ~40kg bus. The bus features large fixed solar panels. Assuming these are triple junction solar cells, maximum power generation is probably around 90 watts angling the sun to meet shine on three panels at once. There is a massive X-band antenna for high speed communications and S-band patch antennas for TT&C which appear distributed across various faces to make the system near-omni-directional. A large, possibly in-house developed, star tracker provides precise attitude determination information. I like this design, fixed panels are simple to build and limit risk. It looks like they took a lens and strapped on only what was strictly necessary to make the device self-sufficient. If done right, that structure could be made very affordably.
Compute is handled on a NVIDIA Jetson platform. Interestingly, the article states that as of 2022, the satellite bus could only provide the Jetson with minutes of runtime per orbit. Satellogic’s current website does not mention edge processing indicating they may have pivoted away from the experiment.

Loft and Helsing announced their intentions to launch an AI powered multi-sensor constellation including visual imaging and RF capabilities. These satellites will likely be based upon Loft’s Longbow satellite bus. This is a large-sized satellite bus featuring propulsion for station keeping, a 1.12 Gbps X-band downlink, S-band TT&C link, 0.03 degree pointing performance, 700W peak power with a 200W orbit average generation.
Not much is known about the onboard processing system. It is probably a VPX form factor cluster and legend has it loft is taking a bet on flying many near-commercial GPUs with the expectation of some failing in orbit.
These are large satellites, presumably costing more than $50M per bird.

Esper Satellites launched their hyperspectral imager on a Dhruva Space bus with in-orbit processing provided by Akula Tech. They are sending the right message… low-cost hyperspectral imagery with in-orbit processing enabling live object detection and reducing the amount of data being downlinked.
The bus is a fairly standard 20-50 kg microsat featuring some nice double deployable solar panels likely producing a maximum power of around 120W and an orbit average power of 40-60W. It can host up to a 12U payload. (Interlude, Dhruva also has a 0.5U bus which I personally enjoy a lot, we need more like it). The bus is made in India, which has a fast-growing space scene.
Where this mission becomes questionable is in the payloads. First off, the processor appears to be less than 0.5U and the imager looks less than 3U in volume. Why was such a large bus used? When researching, I was initially blown away by the price of Esper space’s hyperspectral imagery - $1.50 per km in bulk! This is cheaper than Planet, so I began searching through their website for what the resolution is… The GSD number is nowhere to be found on Esper’s website. Thankfully Dhruva messed up and listed it on their news page! 30 meters. If you were thinking of buying images, I might direct you towards ESA’s Copernicus portal where you can get similar data… for free… (especially after CHIME is launched).
Onboard processing is provided by Akula Tech’s Nexus-01 which uses a single NVIDIA Jetson Tx2i module. This is a very interesting choice since the next generation NVIDIA Jetson Orin carrier boards offer 40x more compute and are already pretty commoditized in the industry…
Overall, these companies have the right idea, and it is exciting to see where they will go, but they are going to need to accelerate their pace to become relevant.

The most hyped-up consultants on the planet are now seeking to “drive resilience into nationaly security space by providing decision-makers with critical information on operationally relevant timescales,” whatever that means. Anyways, they’re planning another AI EO constellation.
Few details are available. We can most likely expect another multi-hundred kilogram satellite bus developed by Voyager flying a sourced VPX cluster of AI hardware with customer and onboard processing software developed by Palantir. Jokes aside, these are very established and extremely capable companies and anyone building high-end competing alternatives would be foolish to disregard them.

Phantom Space’s proposed “data centers in space” platform is called the Phantom cloud. Pictures on their website seem to show basic renders of a multi-hundred kilogram imaging satellite. Press releases show they have partnered with Ubotica for processing hardware. All said, Phantom Space has a lot of work ahead of them if they are going to develop a launch vehicle and satellite constellation.
Ubotica appears to have more humble aspirations featuring multiple Intel Movidius Myriad X CV Visual Processing Unit based on-board computers designed for the CubeSat form factor on their website.

The pair seeks to provide accurate vessel detection and classification in under one hour of satellite observation. The financial state of Sidus space remains... interesting.

Privateer has previously emerged from stealth to reveal work on the Pono on-board computer and a plan for a future edge processing constellation mainly focused on space situational awareness. Most mentions of hardware or a constellation have since been removed from their website suggesting a pivot to on-board and ground software in support of other players in the AI EO space. It is possible that they are still working on a constellation, but simply re-entered stealth.
Actively backed by Apple’s Steve Wozniak, Privateer has raised a $56.5M series A following an impressive seed round. My gut tells me that they have too much talent and too much funding to fade away into irrelevance.
